I am a Woman

By AnonymousI am a woman, for I am strong
Though it only made us disagree.
You approached me with similar strength,
But you hurt me.
Was it the confidence that I carried that offended you?
Or the way I walk from toe to heel?
Was it the way my shorts lay on my body?
Or the way that it made you feel?
Was it the discomfort of your own life that turned you?
Or perhaps it was the view of my striking eyes?
Was it the jealousy of my youth?
Or was it simply the size of my thighs?
Why was the anger in your voice so sincere?
Was the intention truly to improve?
Did you believe that things would change?
Or was it all meant to amuse?
Surely you must know the power of your words,
Or the aura of rejection they leave,
Your delivery of words contained confidence
For you are also a woman, not naive.
Have you given me a thought since that day?
Why do I still see you in the aisles of the store?
Have you perhaps returned to see me or stayed away?
Would you retract your insults or continue the war?
You are also strong, you are more
So, I know you will persevere.
I am sorry for the lecture in response,
But the source of my returned hostility was clear.
Would you forgive me as I forgave you?
Is there a way to remain civil?
Could I have changed your view?
Or would your forgiveness be artificial?
We are women, we are strong,
historically, we have learned to adapt.
We have forced ourselves to belong,
So our strength will not remain trapped.

Our Reality

by Jane Doe
I walk to my car with keys between my fingers
Because I know how much I have to lose
If the man from the shop lingers
And decides to make an advance or beat me black and blue.
Walking alone at night is something I can’t do
Because it makes me easy prey.
Someone might take it as a cue,
Or a chance to steal me away.
My mind is not safe from this poison either.
To make myself more appealing
and have the body of a “keeper”,
I cut off my eating and concealed my feelings.
If I wear the clothes I like,
The truck on the road might honk and yell out “whore”.
If I dress how I dislike,
I’m a prude and nothing more.
Not even my government is free from blame.
When they tell me what I can do with my body,
And force me into shame,
For choosing a path a man has deemed naughty.
For those who say I’m simply overreacting,
that my grievances are nothing more than child’s play,
I ask you what would be your feeling
If I slapped your ass and walked away,
If I slipped something in your drink and you fell into disarray,
If you denied my number and I tailed you to your dismay.
If the situation was reversed,
And you had a different role to play:
you were the one who felt cursed.
Would you sit quietly and just smile anyway?

I Don't Wanna Live Like That

by Meghan Chen

Lyrics:We were talking ‘bout a lover in a cover song
You said to change the she to he
And when I said I didn’t need that, you just shrugged off
And I got quiet, let it be
I’m sorry that I failed to be clear with you, staying true
Guess I can’t prevail if I’m being honest
Maybe you don’t care, but I’m scared of you, scared you
Though we wanna talk, we won’t ever say it
‘Cause that’s gonna keep us goodHere I am, I’m choking on my words
All I want to do is keep my worth
So You won’t ever know that I’m a freak
That’s why I am never gonna speak
But I don’t want to live like that
I don’t want to live like that
I don’t want to live like that
Still I gotta live like that
One day it’s going to come out
I have accepted that
and yes I wish sometimes it would
But now I’m screaming in my head
Trying to hold it back
In doubt you would have understood
I’m sorry that I failed to be clear with you, staying true
Guess I can’t prevail if I’m being honest
Maybe you don’t care, but I’m scared of you, scared of you
Though we wanna talk, we won’t ever say it
‘Cause that’s gonna keep us goodlook at me, I’m choking on my words
desperately I want to keep my worth
So You won’t ever know that I’m a freak
That’s why I am never gonna speak
But I don’t want to live like that
I don’t want to live like that
I don’t want to live like that
Still I have live like that
(Musical interlude)
It’s simple, it’s so so simple...
Simple things aren’t easier to say
Simple things confuse me every day
You‘ll miss the details, given I’m the freak
But even so, I know someday I’ll speak
Cuz I don’t want to live like that
I don’t want to live like that
Now I have to live like that
But someday I won’t live like that
